In the course of this project new information services for online library catalogs are studied. A particular focus is laid on recommender systems as services for the automatic generation of literature recommendations. The combination of explicit recommender services and personalization enables the development of customer-oriented service portals.
Therefore university lecturers, scientists and students are able to save some of their valuable time, which is now required e.g. to recommend standard literature among themselves and to identify additional relevant documents and structures that are difficult to find by traditional approaches.
Librarians profit through the improvement of customer service and satisfaction through recommendations as well as additional support for market research, product evaluation, and collection management. Recommendations combined with user behavior can even be used for inter library collection management.
Altogether this results in a great potential for the improvement of literature supply. Especially the access to literature beyond the own library can be improved by the employment of inter library recommender systems. Suitable proceedings for the installation of recommender systems in scientific libraries and meta library catalogs are developed, tested, and the services will be made fully operational within library systems.
The goal of the project is the permanent improvement of the information infrastructure of scientific libraries in Germany.
